In August 2016, UK King’s Daughters opened the AIMS (Advanced Illness Management Services) Unit to provide enhanced and streamlined care for patients who have life-limiting illnesses. Through AIMS, patients and their families have access to a multidisciplinary team of physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, social workers, case managers, and chaplains dedicated not only to treating/managing each patient’s physical symptoms, but also meeting emotional, social, and spiritual needs.

UK King’s Daughters 27-bed inpatient unit for general adult Behavioral Health provides care to individuals in acute crisis with a range of diagnoses including, but not limited to: bipolar disorder, major depression, psychotic disorders, anxiety disorders, and comorbid personality disorders. Our care team consists of RNs, LPNs, patient care techs, nurse externs, recreational therapists, social workers, intake nurses, case managers, physicians, and nurse practitioners.

The Cardiac Stepdown Unit cares for patients with chest pain, patients requiring intravenous cardiac medications, and preoperative screening of Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG) patients.

The Cardiac Surgery Unit manages care for patients with cardiac issues, post-cardiac surgery such as Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG), and lung procedures such as Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (VATS).

The Clinical Decision Unit (CDU) is a new 24-bed inpatient unit that allows our providers to monitor and evaluate the medical condition of patients. While in the CDU, patients will be regularly assessed by a multidisciplinary care team of physicians, nurse practitioners, and other clinical professionals, providing all necessary diagnostic tests, medications, and therapies for a widely varied patient population. For RNs, this unit offers opportunities to improve their skills with IV insertion, foley insertion and care, telemetry monitoring, and wound care, as well as other important nursing skills.

The UK King’s Daughters Emergency Department has 54 total treatment spaces and averages approximately 62K visits annually. The team cares for all patients of all generations with any presentation complaints, from pediatric care to geriatric. Our nursing staff is trained to assess and stabilize any presenting condition. The ED includes a Stat Lab for ED-only labs, as well as dedicated ED pharmacists, Physicians, PA-Cs and APRNs. Our team includes ancillary department assistance and works as one to ensure safety of our patients and coordination of care with EMTs, paramedics, nurse externs, pharmacy, lab, phlebotomy, respiratory, environmental services, case management, social work, and many more, to function as one large multi-disciplinary team to care for all walks of life.

UK King’s Daughters Heart and Vascular Recovery Unit prepares patients for and provides recovery care following cardiac catheterization and other interventional procedures such as Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG). Specially trained nurses, respiratory therapists, physicians, and other dedicated healthcare professionals closely monitor the patients’ 24-hour care during their time on the unit.

UK King’s Daughters Home Health is an essential part of the nursing system that offers a diverse patient population within a flexible, customized workday in which nurses drive from appointment to appointment, helping educate patients and caregivers about treatments, providing counseling and care, and assessing the patient’s progress. Nursing in the patient’s home allows you to be better equipped to learn their day-to-day lifestyle and potential dangers and conditions that may affect the patient’s potential to recover. As a nurse in Home Health, you can truly see the impact you have on the patient and the patient’s family.

UK King’s Daughters Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is a 24-bed unit staffed by an experienced critical care team and equipped with technologies to provide lifesaving care for patients requiring specialized care after surgery or a serious injury. This 25-bed unit cares for patients with a multitude of health conditions from chest pain, cellulitis, wounds, COPD, pneumonia, CHF, kidney injury, sepsis, abdominal pain, mental health concerns requiring medical attention, and patients requiring cardiac drips. The Internal Medicine unit is a great path to solidify a nurse’s foundation out of school and lay a path to critical care.

With seven Labor, Delivery, and Recovery Suites (LDR), the Labor and Delivery Unit (L&D) is well-equipped to support and care for mothers during their delivery. The unit has two operating rooms (OR) and two peri-anesthesia beds (PACU) on Labor and Delivery if complications arise and a c-section is indicated. Our L&D specialty nurses continue to care for our patients throughout their phases of labor and delivery. The Newborn Nursery Nurse meets the newborn immediately upon delivery and supports the mother in initial bonding, breastfeeding, and completing the newborn assessments.

They also provide extensive education to parents on how to care for their babies at home.

The Mother Baby Unit is an 18-bed unit adjacent to Labor and Delivery where couplet care is provided. As the mother and baby room together during their stay, the mother-baby nurse is there to give comfort, support, and education on how to care for herself and the newborn baby. The nurse provides post-delivery care to the mother and assesses the baby to ensure they are recovering from their journey into the world and making healthy strides in their first few days of life.

As an inpatient department, the Oncology Specialty unit focuses on managing symptoms, chemotherapy administration, and new diagnoses for patients.

Respiratory Stepdown administers intermediate levels of care for patients with respiratory issues, both chronic and acute, including patients receiving complex medications that may require titration based on the vital signs, stable vented patients, and cardiac patients.

“Working on the Behavioral Medicine Unit at UK King's Daughters gives me the opportunity to work with individuals in the community that are often overlooked and misunderstood. Patients that are admitted to our unit are sometimes at the lowest point in their lives. Giving them the tools necessary to begin to build a solid foundation and realize their self-worth and value is why I love what I do!”
