Summary

  • JOB SUMMARY
    • Detects malignant and premalignant conditions which are used for treatment and diagnosis of disease, disorder, etc. of body fluid by performing required duties and responsibilities.
  • DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 
    • Assigns each gynecologic specimen an accession number upon receipt in the department and is responsible for data entry in the computer system
    • Stains and coverslips all gynecological and non-gynecological slides
    • Maintains gynecologic and non-gynecologic staining set ups
    • Changes, rotates and filters solutions as needed
    • Documents staining quality control on monthly records.
    • Makes Saccomanno Cytology Fixative and graded alcohols as needed
    • Maintains supplies needed for OB-GYN office and documents outgoing supplies
    • Performs STAT testing within the established turn-around guidelines and responds to demands for information regarding patients test results as requested
    • Maintains high level of confidentiality
  • EDUCATION/LICENSE/ CERTIFICATIONS/OTHER REQUIREMENTS
    • Minimum requirement:
      • Bachelor of Science degree in Cytotechnology Science required
      • ASCP (American Society for Clinical Pathology) Cytotechnologist certification or equivalent required.

  • WORKING ENVIRONMENT
    • This job operates in a professional medical laboratory environment.
    • Regularly works near moving mechanical parts
    • Regularly exposed to blood and/or body fluids and infection. 
    • Occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals
    • Occasionally exposed to risk of radiation
    • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • PHYSICAL DEMANDS
    • Occasionally required to maintain a stationary position (standing or sitting)
    • Frequently required to walk and move about
    • Frequently required to operate a computer and other equipment
    • Frequently required to use fine motor skills to handle and operate instruments/devices
    • Regularly required to communicate with physicians and other care team requiring talking and hearing 
    • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
