Summary

  • JOB SUMMARY
    • The Certified Medical Technician (CMT) under the general supervision of the department leader provides assistance to the Registered Nurse (RN), and/or the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in the delivery of patient care.  
  • DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
    • Assists the RN/LPN with non-nursing tasks such as but not limited to crash cart checks, quality control checks, retrieving equipment/supplies, keeping the department clean and stocking of supplies.
    • Assists the RN/LPN with routine patient care and treatment of patients as delegated by the RN/LPN or designee and under the direct supervision of the RN/LPN including, but not limited to vital signs, Intake Output, pain level assessment, administering enemas, applying hot/cold packs, glucoscans, height and weight, transporting, ambulating, answering call lights, cleaning equipment, sitting 1:1’s, EKG’s, receiving patients in room, assisting in pre/post-operative care, assisting in admission/discharge activities and assisting in treatments.
    • Recognizes and practices within scope of certification and competency levels and relays any questions, concerns or situations requiring follow-up or attention to the supervising RN/LPN and seeks assistance when necessary.
    • Effectively communicates pertinent information in shift-to-shift and transfer reports and documents items in EPIC as indicated.
    • Responds and assists in emergency/urgent situations as indicated, such as ERT calls.
    • Transports patients per protocol and gives handoff to receiving team member.
    • Emergency Department CMT’s perform the following in addition to the above: Wound Care, Splinting, crutch fitting and teaching, prepare supplies and assist provides with procedures, assist with triaging ambulance patients, ear irrigation, suture/staple removal, and spinal immobilization.
  • EDUCATION/LICENSE/CERTIFICATION/OTHER REQUIREMENTS
    • Minimum requirement:
      • High School diploma or GED and completion of an approved Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) program. 
      • Achieves and maintains active licensure in the State of Kentucky or National Registry as an EMT-B at a minimum. 
      • Achieves and maintains American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
      • Achieves and maintains Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (CPI) within 90 days of start.

  • WORKING ENVIRONMENT
    • Constantly works near moving mechanical parts
    • Constantly exposed to blood and/or body fluids and infection. 
    • Occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals
    • Occasionally exposed to risk of radiation
    • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • PHYSICAL DEMANDS
    • Occasionally required to maintain in a stationary position (standing or sitting).
    • Frequently required to walk and move about.
    • Frequently required to operate a computer and other equipment.
    • Frequently required to use fine motor skills to handle and operate instruments/devices.
    • Constantly required to lift and/or move items up to 10 pounds.
    • Frequently required to lift and/or move items up to 50 pounds.
    • Occasionally required to lift and/or move items up to 100 pounds.
    • Constantly required to communicate with patients and other care team requiring talking and hearing. 
    • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
    • Occasionally required to position self in order to meet patient needs.
