Summary

  • JOB SUMMARY
    • Prepares, seasons, and cooks meals for hospital patients, employees, and visitors.
  • DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 
    • Overall performance rating of below indicated essential job duties:
    • Follows safe food-handling procedures. Washes hands frequently. Handles dishes, equipment and flatware to avoid food contact surface contamination.  Maintains cooking area in a clean, neat and orderly manner.  Maintains a clean, and neat personal appearance.  Carries and safely handles hot liquids and foods.
    • Reviews menus and production schedules to determine type and quantities of meats, vegetables, soups, salads and desserts to be prepared.  Plans cooking schedule to ensure that food will be properly prepared and ready at specified times. Confers with supervisor regarding modified diet preparation and use of left-overs.
    • Washes, trims, cooks and seasons food items for various recipes.  Uses measuring tools and utensils to measure and mix ingredients according to recipes.
    • Operates, disassembles, cleans, sanitizes and reassembles a variety of kitchen utensils and equipment such as blenders, mixers, grinders, slicers and tenderizers.  Inspects all work surfaces and equipment to identify soil or disrepair to assure safe and proper operation of equipment.  Cleans and sanitizes work surfaces, utensils, and food preparation equipment.  Immerses, scrubs, washes, wipes and manipulates equipment parts, utensils, food and dishes to clean.
    • Bakes, roasts, broils and steams meat, fish and other foods.  Observes and tastes food being cooked and adds ingredients of seasoning to improve flavor or texture as needed.  Tests food being cooked by checking temperature, tasting, smelling and/or piercing to determine that it is cooked. Adjusts heat controls and timers on ovens, grills, etc. as required.  Procures foodstuff from refrigerator, freezer, or other storage areas.  Safely manipulates knives to peel, chop and slice food.
    • Reads and interprets thermometers to test for safe holding temperatures and sufficient cooking temperatures.  Maintains written documents of all food temperatures.  Maintains written temperature charts on refrigerators and freezers.  Properly wraps, dates, labels and initials foods for storage.
    • Selects appropriate cleaning and sanitizing solutions; follows safety precautions when using hazardous chemicals. Wears goggles, gloves, masks or other protective equipment according to written instructions.  Sweeps and mops floors to clean up spills and clean work area.  Understands and complies with work rules and safety regulations and Health Dept. standards.
  • EDUCATION/LICENSE/ CERTIFICATIONS/OTHER REQUIREMENTS
    • Minimum requirement:
      • Succesful completion of Wonderlic Cognitive Ability Assessment 
      • Successfully passes Cook’s test
    • Preferred qualifications:
      • One (1) to three (3) months of related experience or training.
  • WORKING ENVIRONMENT
    • Constantly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and extreme heat.
    • Occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals and extreme cold.
    • Frequently works near moving mechanical parts.
    • Frequently exposed to sharp knives, blades and other sharp implements.
    • Required to wear rubber soled shoes as precaution to prevent slips and falls
    • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • PHYSICAL DEMANDS
    • Frequently required to move about throughout the department and facility.
    • Constantly required to use fine motor skills to handle and operate instruments/devices.
    • Frequently required to lift and/or move items up to 25 pounds.
    • Occasionally required to lift and/or move items up to 50 pounds.
    • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
