Summary

  • JOB SUMMARY
    • The Surgical Technician/CST is a clinically competent team member who works under the supervision of the registered nurse in delivering safe and effective care to the patient during the intra-operative period. Effectively interacts with patients and health care team members, while maintaining the surgical department standards.
  • DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
    • Assists the RN with patients on admission in a timely manner.  Provides any/all input as too patient's condition on admission. Notifies RN and/or physician of any critical findings or changes following admission.  Assists the RN with information for documentation on the perioperative record. Retrieves supplies and equipment from medication room as directed by the RN.
    • Scrubs on all types of surgical procedures and assists the surgical team by passing instruments, sutures and sponges; assists in holding retractors and suctioning.  Responsible for maintaining strict aseptic technique and reporting and correcting any breaks in such techniques.  Knows principles of electrosurgical hemostatis and safety and performs interventions for patient safety at all times, Considers any special requirements of the surgeon performing the procedure.  Manages and secures medications in the sterile field, as per policy. Anticipates the needs of the surgeon.  Performs sponge, sharps and instrument count according to policy.
    • Acts as an advocate in providing safe delivery of care.  Shows awareness of the patients needs: physiological, psychosocial and emotional.  Maintains safety and dignity of patient at all times
    • Demonstrates working knowledge of universal precautions
    • Assists in provision of a clean and safe environment.
    • Applies the principle of infection control and universal precaution, adherence to OSHA standards, Hazardous Material Guidelines, and isolation procedures Documentation
  • EDUCATION/LICENSE/CERTIFICATION/OTHER REQUIREMENTS
    • Minimum requirement:
      • Graduate from an accredited Surgical Technologist course.
      • Achieves and maintains American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS).
      • Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) certification
    • Preferred qualifications:
  • WORKING ENVIRONMENT
    • Constantly works near moving mechanical parts
    • Constantly exposed to blood and/or body fluids and infection. 
    • Occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals
    • Occasionally exposed to risk of radiation
    • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • PHYSICAL DEMANDS
    • Occasionally required to maintain in a stationary position (standing or sitting).
    • Frequently required to walk and move about.
    • Frequently required to operate a computer and other equipment.
    • Frequently required to use fine motor skills to handle and operate instruments/devices.
    • Constantly required to lift and/or move items up to 10 pounds.
    • Frequently required to lift and/or move items up to 50 pounds.
    • Occasionally required to lift and/or move items up to 100 pounds.
    • Constantly required to communicate with patients and other care team requiring talking and hearing. 
    • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
    • Occasionally required to position self in order to meet patient needs.
