Summary

  • JOB SUMMARY
    • Draws blood from patients in hospital, or similar facility, for analysis or other medical purposes
  • DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 
    • Assembles equipment, such as tourniquet, needles, disposable containers for needles, blood collection devices, gauze, cotton and alcohol, on work tray in accordance to requirements for specified tests of procedures
    • Verifies or records identity of patient and converses with patient to allay fear of procedure
    • Correctly labels blood collected from patient listing patients name, medical record number, physician, date and time collected, and initials
    • Correctly verifies in the computer the blood was collected
    • Deliver the specimen collected to the correct department in the laboratory
    • Regularly checks the collected and uncollected lists
    • Attends mandatory training programs
  • EDUCATION/LICENSE/ CERTIFICATIONS/OTHER REQUIREMENTS
    • Minimum requirement:
      • High school diploma or Associate’s degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two year college or technical school; or completion of a certified phlebotomy course  or one year related experience and/or training
      • National Phlebotomist certification through accredited program

  • WORKING ENVIRONMENT
    • This job operates in a professional medical laboratory environment
    • Regularly works near moving mechanical parts
    • Constantly exposed to blood and/or body fluids and infection. 
    • Occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals
    • Occasionally exposed to risk of radiation
    • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • PHYSICAL DEMANDS
    • Occasionally required to maintain a stationary position (standing or sitting)
    • Frequently required to walk and move about
    • Frequently required to operate a computer and other equipment
    • Frequently required to use fine motor skills to handle and operate instruments/devices
    • Frequently required to position self in order to meet patient needs
    • Regularly required to communicate with patients and other care team requiring talking and hearing 
    • Frequently required to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
    • Occasionally required to life and/or move up to 50 pounds.
    • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
