Job Summary

Responsible for assisting registered nurses in delivering safe, high-quality patient care while gaining advanced clinical experience through a structured externship program. Works under the direct supervision of a Clinical Nurse Leader, RN preceptor, or designee to perform advanced clinical and non-clinical tasks validated through school-based training and on-site competency assessment. Supports patient comfort, safety, and overall care coordination while developing professional nursing skills and clinical judgment.


Essential Functions

• Provides direct patient care support under the supervision of an RN preceptor, including validated advanced skills such as sterile dressing changes, Foley catheter insertion, IV access insertion, and NG tube management.

• Assists the RN preceptor with non-nursing tasks including crash cart checks, equipment retrieval, supply stocking, and maintaining clean and organized patient care areas.

• Obtains and documents vital signs, intake and output, and pain assessments as delegated by the supervising RN.

• Assists in patient transport, ambulation, admission, discharge, and pre- and post-operative care activities.

• Supports patient and family education under the direction of the RN and reinforces information provided by the care team.

• Practices within scope of validated competency levels and seeks assistance when questions or concerns arise.

• Communicates effectively during shift reports and documents accurately in the electronic health record as indicated.

• Demonstrates professional conduct consistent with organizational mission, policies, and standards of practice.

• Participates in training, reflection, and skill development sessions as part of the externship program.

• Performs other duties as assigned.

Certifications & Licensures

Active enrollment in an accredited nursing program for Registered Nurses with one year completed of ADN program or 3 years completed of BSN program.

Achieves and maintains American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Achieves and maintains Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (CPI) within 3 months of start.
