Job Summary

Responsible for performing routine to moderately complex support tasks in the Cytology Laboratory to assist with specimen processing and slide preparation. Ensures accurate labeling, handling, and documentation of cytologic specimens in accordance with established procedures. Maintains laboratory equipment and supplies to support efficient operations. Adheres to quality, safety, and regulatory standards while assisting cytotechnologists and pathologists in diagnostic workflows.


Essential Functions

• Receive, label, and process cytology specimens according to established laboratory protocols.

• Prepare slides for staining, screening, and microscopic evaluation by cytotechnologists and pathologists.

• Maintain specimen integrity by following proper handling, storage, and transport procedures.

• Clean, organize, and maintain laboratory equipment, instruments, and work areas.

• Assist with reagent preparation, staining procedures, and quality control checks as directed.

• Enter and verify patient and specimen data accurately in the laboratory information system.

• Monitor inventory levels and restock supplies to support daily workflow.

• Adhere to laboratory safety and infection control procedures at all times.

• Communicate effectively with laboratory staff to ensure timely and accurate processing of specimens.

• Perform other duties as assigned.


Education Requirement

High school diploma

Typically requires some specialized technical, vocational education, or equivalent is preferred


Experience Requirement

1-2 years of experience in healthcare support, or a relevant area


An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. All experience must be paid and in the same related field. Part-time and PRN experience will be prorated based on hours worked per week. Volunteer work and internships for academic credit are not counted.

Physical Demands

This position is occasionally required to maintain a stationary position (standing or sitting), but more frequently involves walking and moving about the laboratory. Frequent use of computers and other equipment, and fine motor skills to handle or operate instruments, is essential. Regular communication with patients and other care team members is required, often involving talking and hearing. The role frequently requires lifting and/or moving up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds. Vision requirements include close, distance, color, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
