Summary

  • JOB SUMMARY    
    • The Dietary Assistant prepares and serves palatable, nourishing, well-balanced diets to meet the daily nutritional and special dietary needs for each resident according to their comprehensive resident assessment and plan of care.  All dietary service tasks to store, prepare or serve food and to clean and sanitize equipment and workspaces are done in accordance with facility policies and procedures and in compliance with State and Federal laws and regulations to enhance resident comfort and enhance the quality of life.
  • DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
    • Overall performance rating of below indicated essential job duties:
    • Assembles diet trays for residents according to facility procedures, matching foods, drinks and condiments to diet cards for each resident.  Loads trays onto tray cart for delivery throughout the facility.
    • Pushes carts weighing up to 30 pounds to dining areas and resident unites.  Carries individual trays weighing up to 5 pounds to neighborhood units when necessary.
    • Respects Residents’ preferences about personal menu items.  Reports refusal of food served to designated supervisor and to Charge Nurse to substitute meal can be provided.  Obtains instructions from supervisor and makes substitutes as directed for residents who refuse the meal as served.
    • Delivers nourishments, food supplements and snacks to units as scheduled and/or directed. 
    • Maintains food service equipment (clean and in proper operating condition) according to facility procedures.  Promptly reports all problems, including equipment breakdowns, to the Manager.
    • Assists with food preparation as assigned.  Operates institutional food preparation equipment according to equipment instructions and/or Manager’s directions.
  • EDUCATION/LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS/OTHER REQUIREMENTS
    • Minimum requirement:
      • Successful completion of Wonderlic Cognitive Ability Assessment .

    • Preferred qualifications:
      • Prior food service experience in an institutional setting.
  • WORKING ENVIRONEMENT
    • The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those a team member encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. While performing the duties of this job, the team member may occasionally be exposed to blood or other body fluids, fumes, or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals. This job cannot be performed without exposure to the stresses associated with an intimate, 24 hour residential care environment that delivers care and services primarily to disabled and cognitively impaired residents.  Examples of these stresses include, but are not limited to:  shift rotation, weekend and holiday duty, unusual or impaired behavior by residents, family reactions to having a loved one in the nursing home, death, and dying, oversight of state surveyors, ombudsmen and federal officials, presence of consultants and attorneys, and variable involvement of medical staff. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
    • Frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, extreme heat and extreme cold.
    • Occasionally works near moving mechanical parts.
    • Frequently exposed to sharp knives, blades and other sharp implements.
    • Routinely uses a computer.
  • PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Occasionally required to lift objects of 10 to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and peripheral vision.
    • Frequently required to move about inside the department and facility.
    • Constantly required to communicate telephonically and face to face with colleagues and customers.
    • Frequently required to use fine motor skills to handle and operate instruments/devices.
    • Constantly required to operate a computer and telephone.
    • Constantly required to lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.
    • Frequently required to lift and/or move up to 60 pounds.
