JOB SUMMARY
-
The Advanced Nurse Extern is a nursing student who under the general supervision of the Clinical Nurse Leader or his/her designee provides assistance to the RN in the delivery of patient care. The Advanced Nurse Extern is responsible and accountable for ensuring that his/her behavior is consistent with the mission, goals, objectives, standards, and policies and procedures of King's Daughters' Medical Center (KDMC).
*This position requires a commitment of full time hours during a specified time during the summer. At the completion of the program, team members will transition to a Nurse Extern role and will not be able to perform those advanced skills as highlighted in bold under Duties and Essential Funtions.

DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- The Advanced Nurse Extern can only be delegated those tasks for which they have had successful clinical training through their school of nursing and for which they have received validation on at KDMC.
- Assists the RN preceptor with non-nursing tasks such as but not limited to crash cart checks, quality control checks, retrieving equipment/supplies, keeping the department clean and stocking of supplies.
- Assists the RN preceptor with routine patient care and treatment of patients as delegated by the RN preceptor or designee and under the direct supervision of the RN preceptor including, but not limited to vital signs, Intake Output, pain level assessment, administering enemas, applying hot/cold packs, glucoscans, height and weight, transporting, ambulating, answering call lights, cleaning equipment, sitting 1:1’s, receiving patients in room, assisting in pre/post-operative care, assisting in admission/discharge activities, assisting with wound care, NG Tube insertion, management, and discontinuation, sterile dressing changes, foley catheter insertion, insertion of IV access, and assisting in treatments.
- Recognizes and practices within scope of certification and competency levels and relays any questions, concerns or situations requiring follow-up or attention to the supervising RN preceptor and seeks assistance when necessary.
- Effectively communicates pertinent information in shift-to-shift and transfer reports and documents items in EPIC as indicated.
- The following duties can never be delegated to a Nurse Extern:

Any independent assumption of the role, function, or responsibility of a nurse

Receipt or transcription of verbal orders

EDUCATION/LICENSE/CERTIFICATION/OTHER REQUIREMENTS
-
Minimum requirement:
-
High School diploma or GED
-
Active enrollment in an accredited nursing program for Registered Nurses with one year completed of ADN program or 3 years completed of BSN program.

Achieves and maintains American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
-
Achieves and maintains Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (CPI) within 3 months of start.

Provides most recent transcripts with skills list validations upon hire.
