Histotech Trainee

  • JOB SUMMARY
    • Prepares histologic slides from tissue sections for microscopic examination and diagnosis by pathologists
  • DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 
    • Overall performance rating of below indicated essential job duties:
    • Prepares sections of human or animal tissue for examination
    • Routine tissue processing techniques to cut, mount and stain tissue specimen received for histologic examination
    • Process, cut and stain blocks of tissue from autopsy specimens
    • Assign ID number to all pathology specimens
    • Keep a properly indexed file of slides and paraffin blocks
    • Prepares reagent, stains and solutions as necessary for processing tissue specimens
    • Maintain a complete process improvement program including monitoring logs, equipment and instrument maintenance records, control data, standards and safety maternal, procedures manuals
  • EDUCATION/LICENSE/ CERTIFICATIONS/OTHER REQUIREMENTS
    • Minimum requirement:
      • At least 60 semester hours, or equivalent, from an accredited institution that, at a minimum, include either—
        • 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses; or
        • 24 semester hours of science courses that include—
          • Six semester hours of chemistry; and
          • Six semester hours of biology; and
          • Twelve semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination

    • This job operates in a professional medical laboratory environment
    • Regularly works near moving mechanical parts
    • Regularly exposed to blood and/or body fluids and infection. 
    • Occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals
    • Occasionally exposed to risk of radiation
    • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • PHYSICAL DEMANDS
    • Occasionally required to maintain a stationary position (standing or sitting).
    • Frequently required to walk and move about.
    • Frequently required to operate a computer and other equipment.
    • Frequently required to use fine motor skills to handle and operate instruments/devices.
    • Regularly required to communicate with physicians and other care team requiring talking and hearing. 
    • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
