Histotechnician

  • JOB SUMMARY
    • Prepares histologic slides from tissue sections for microscopic examination and diagnosis by pathologists by performing required duties and responsibilities.
  • DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 
    • Overall performance rating of below indicated essential job duties:
    • Prepares sections of human or animal tissues for examination
    • Routine tissue processing techniques to cut, mount and stain tissue specimens received for histologic examination
    • Process, cut and stain blocks of tissue from autopsy specimens
    • Assign identification numbers to all pathology specimens
    • Prepares reagent, stains, and solutions as necessary for processing tissue specimens
    • Maintains a complete process improvement program including monitoring logs, equipment and instrument maintenance records, control data, standards and safety maternal procedures manuals
    • Performs routine maintenance on all equipment
  • EDUCATION/LICENSE/ CERTIFICATIONS/OTHER REQUIREMENTS
    • Minimum requirement:
      • Associate in Science or equivalent from an accredited college/technical school
      • Maintains active HT (ASCP) certification or equivalent

  • WORKING ENVIRONMENT
    • This job operates in a professional medical laboratory environment.
    • Constantly works near moving mechanical parts
    • Constantly exposed to blood and/or body fluids and infection. 
    • Occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals
    • Occasionally exposed to risk of radiation
    • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • PHYSICAL DEMANDS
    • Occasionally required to maintain a stationary position (standing or sitting)
    • Frequently required to walk and move about
    • Frequently required to operate a computer and other equipment
    • Frequently required to use fine motor skills to handle and operate instruments/devices
    • Constantly required to communicate with patients and other care team requiring talking and hearing
